South Africa

This country has been an unexpected pleasure. Although rampant with inequality, poverty, social problems and political corruption, there is a bit of hope and a happiness that permeates despite everything. Having been here since March after coming for a birthday, we got stuck here after the government decided to impose a countrywide lockdown to delay the … of the Coronavirus, which effectively closed the borders to outgoing international travel. As American citizens abroad watching the events unfold in the US, we decided that weathering the Coronavirus outbreak would be somewhat safer in Cape Town than the US. We don’t regret it.

Before the lockdown went into effect, we had the opportunity to see much of the Western Cape. From Cape Town to Ceres Karoo and some places in between, we discovered much of a beautiful, unique country that has much to offer in scenery and culinary experiences. Having met locals and those who moved to South Africa in hopes of something better, we discovered a love and respect for the people, landscape and food that the country has to offer.
